The golden cage symbolizes the beautiful house that a husband builds for his wife. The door to the house, like the door to a cage, should always remain open to illustrate her freedom. A bird, like a wife, will always return to where it feels comfortable and free.

One might ask, "Shouldn't the wife also build a wall around her husband?" But in the final analysis, neither can really possess the other.
