The caricature by Pepsch Gottscheber was first published in the Badischen Neuesten Nachrichten on 27 September 2006. He caricatured the new challenges with the eastward enlargement of the EU as endless staircase.

Pepsch, 1946 born in Graz, draws since 1974, inter alia, for the Süddeutsche Zeitung. His cartoons also appear in Stern, Der Spiegel, Time and other magazines.
